The Spectrum of Play

You're going to be hit hard with a lot of conflicting advice when you have a child. One of those confusing pieces of advice will be: You need to play with your toddler all day, every time they ask go to them and make sure they have constant stimulation. With all the other things you have to do will this really work?

Toddlers should play independently as that is how they learn. They do not need to be entertained by us with planned activities, rather we should be making ourselves available for spontaneous play. Or, at the most basic level, provide them with the materials to experiment with and let them go from there.

And on the flip side of this coin, adult led play where we get down on their level and initiate play isn't the enemy but the basis of attachment and connection. So how do we balance the types of play in our home and why should we?
